Benefits of opal glass for lighting

What makes OPALIKA® ideal for designers and architects?

This light-diffusing glass consists of a colourless base glass and a thin white flashed layer which diffuses light and reduces shadows. It is manufactured using the traditional Fourcault drawing process, which ensures minimal variations in thickness throughout the milk glass layer.

It can be processed, shaped, curved or even thermally tempered. We deliver exeptional precision and quality for all of these modifications.

This versatility and precission makes it ideal for a wide range of applications, especially in high-end architectural projects and decorative glass solutions.

Some of the outstanding properties of SCHOTT’s high-quality opal glass include:

Improved lighting comfort:
provides even and soft illumination by scattering light uniformly and reducing glare and harsh shadows

Excellent color-rendering:
shows settings in true colors by distributing natural-looking diffused light

Uniform appearance:
offers a smooth and consistent look thanks to minimal variations in thickness and enhances the visual appearance of any space

Durability and scratch resistance:
made to withstand wear and tear and maintaining its appearance over time while also reducing maintaenance costs

Non-flammable:
classified as class A1 non-combuistible material according to DIN 4102, making it safe for various applications

Customizable:
can be cut to size, polished, and fabricated to meet specific project needs

Tested and inspected:
each panel is inspected and tested using homogenous backlighting to ensure consistent quality

Optical and technical properties of SCHOTT light-scattering glass

Light Transmittance and Diffusion Characteristics

The optical properties of OPALIKA® glass offer a perfect balance between light transmission and diffusion, making it ideal for structural and optical components applications.

With a spectral transmittance of aproximately 32%, these translucent glass panels allow enough light to pass through to offer a good balance between illumination and privacy.

These semi-opaque glass sheets have an almost perfect diffusion of visible light. They spreads light evenly in a circular pattern, reducing harsh shadows and distributing light softly across spaces.

Technical properties and measurements

SCHOTT’s white flashed opal glass comes in standard sheet sizes and is available in various thicknesses. These diffusion glass panels can be cut to custom sizes to fit specific project requirements.
